Zcash Climbs Up 130% over 30 Days

Zcash was the only major cryptocurrency trading in the green on Wednesday morning, rising nearly 6% to just above $1,200, while bitcoin held just under $76,000 and XRP led the broader decline, down more than 7%. The split comes on the same day the Federal Reserve is set to announce a rate decision markets have been bracing for, and just after a bruising 24 hours that saw a major piece of crypto legislation fail in the Senate.
A Rough Stretch Going Into Fed Day
Bitcoin dipped below $75,000 on Tuesday before recovering slightly to trade just under $76,000 Wednesday morning, a pullback tied directly to the failure of the CLARITY Act in the U.S. Senate, the bill that would have established clear jurisdictional lines over which regulator, the SEC or CFTC, oversees which categories of digital assets. That bill had been the crypto industry’s central legislative priority for the year, and its failure removed a source of regulatory optimism that had been supporting sentiment in the weeks leading up to the vote.
The fallout showed up quickly in fund flows. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs saw a surge in outflows coinciding with the bill’s failure and bitcoin’s slide below $75,000, with one report putting Wednesday’s ETF outflows at roughly $450 million, among the heaviest single-day withdrawals since June. Leverage took a hit too: roughly $570 million in bullish crypto positions were liquidated as the rally that had been building on hopes the bill would pass reversed sharply, with bitcoin and ether longs absorbing the largest losses, around $190 million each.
Bitcoin’s own Coinbase premium, a measure of buying pressure from U.S.-based investors relative to the rest of the market, sank to a one-month low, with the discount deepening to around -0.07% from roughly -0.02% the day before, a signal that U.S. demand specifically has softened following the bill’s failure.
Why Zcash Is the Exception
Against that backdrop, Zcash’s rally stands out sharply. ZEC rose nearly 6% to trade just above $1,200 as of Wednesday morning, extending a broader run that has made it one of the strongest-performing major crypto assets of the year, up roughly 116% year-to-date by some measures even after a recent pullback from levels above $1,300.
The token’s strength has been building for weeks, tied to renewed attention on Zcash’s shielded, privacy-preserving transaction technology and, more specifically, growing usage of that shielded functionality on the network itself. Reporting around the token’s momentum has pointed to rising shielded-pool usage as a core driver of continued interest, alongside a separate governance development: Zcash holders have been showing strong support for proposals to speed up transaction times and adopt a bitcoin-style halving schedule for the network’s own issuance, changes that would bring ZEC’s monetary policy closer in line with bitcoin’s increasingly scarce, disinflationary model.
That said, Zcash’s run hasn’t been a straight line. The token has shown real volatility around macro catalysts recently, at one point dropping roughly 12% in a single session as traders de-risked ahead of inflation data, before recovering much of that move days later. Some technical analysis has flagged bearish momentum divergence on the token’s chart even during the broader uptrend, a pattern that can precede a sharper correction, with some trader commentary specifically eyeing a potential pullback toward the $850 level if the rally loses steam around this week’s Fed decision.
The Rest of the Market
Outside of Zcash, Wednesday’s session was broadly negative across major tokens. XRP led the decliners, down more than 7% to $1.29. Ether and solana each fell about 3%. Bitcoin, BNB, and tron were all down roughly 1%, a comparatively mild decline next to XRP’s drop but still part of a broadly red session across the board.
The Fed’s decision, expected later Wednesday, carries a quarter-point rate hike already priced into markets, which would lift the federal funds target range into the 3.75%–4% area. Traders covering the setup have emphasized that the size of the move matters less than what happens to longer-dated Treasury yields once the decision lands and the accompanying guidance is digested, a dynamic that will likely shape whether Wednesday’s broad weakness extends into the rest of the week or reverses.
What to Watch Next
Zcash’s outperformance this week is a genuine outlier in an otherwise weak market, and it raises a fair question: is this a durable, standalone trend tied to real usage growth on the network, or a momentum trade vulnerable to the same macro pressure that’s weighing on everything else once the Fed decision lands? The technical warning signs some analysts have flagged, even amid the token’s continued strength, suggest the answer isn’t settled yet.
For the broader market, Wednesday’s session is a snapshot of a crypto market absorbing two distinct shocks at once: a real legislative setback in the CLARITY Act’s failure, and the standard pre-Fed positioning that tends to compress risk appetite regardless of what a specific rate decision ends up being. How both resolve over the coming days, whether ETF outflows stabilize, whether Zcash’s rally holds or fades alongside the rest of the market, and how yields react to the Fed’s actual announcement, will likely do more to set the tone for the rest of September than Wednesday’s numbers alone.
